Historic Lowell is the fourth largest city in Massachusetts. Boston is a 40-minute ride south, while both the states of New Hampshire and Maine are close by and easily accessible from the center of Lowell. Lowell, Massachusetts is a planned urban community based around the Merrimack River. The Merrimack River provided power for the mills, which can still be seen today. Lowell is proud of its folk festival, which brings in over 200,000 people annually. Riverfest, First Night, and Fourth of July fireworks are other annual Lowell events. Lowell received an ‘All-American City” award in 1999 and was a finalist for the award in 1997 and 1998.
