Operated bythe Old Dartmouth Historical Society, the New Bedford Whaling museum perserves the history of early American Colonial whaling culture, New England maritime activity and historical artifacts. This museum is over 100 years old, is home to the world’s largest collection of whaling logbooks, prints, journals and scrimshaw collection. In addition to representing the history and lore of New England whaling culture, the New Bedford Whaling Museum also houses a vast collection of Japanese and Dutch maritime art and artifacts, and houses the world’s largest half-scale ship model, as well as four different complete whale skeletons.
Year-round programs and events at the New Bedford Whaling Museum include the Moby Dick Marathon, Old Dartmouth Lyceum, the Working Waterfront Festival, Summerfest and various children’s programs. The Whaling Museum is truly at the heart of the southern Massachusetts communities, and offers a rich and diverse landscape to learn about a piece of history that no longer exists.
