Becket, Massachusetts was one of the first towns to not spend tax money on the church. The idea came from seeing the struggles in surrounding towns. Becket residents decided to make the church its own community responsible for raise funds independently. Becket has been involved in many trades over the years, from lumber to silk. Over time, all of these Becket industries have died out. Today, Becket is most well known for its fishing and tourism industries. Becket is home to Jacob’s Pillow Company, a well known school for dance that is instrumental in maintaining the artistic community within Becket.
