Situated between Springfield and Worcester, Hadley, Massachusetts was founded on a strong agricultural economy, but this shifted in the 1960s with the development of the highway system and the expansion of the nearby University of Massachusetts at Amherst. During this time much of the existing farmland was transformed into housing for students and faculty.
